Haven't taken the plunge with iOS 10 yet, but surely Apple has now included a free built-in calculator by now, right?

Well, technically there is no app, but you can use Spotlight for basic calculations like 42*1337. Just type it in with the operators +*/- and you get a result. Not that advanced, but it works nicely without an additional app. Spotlight can also answer queries like "$ in €", which is quite handy.

I've heard that. But to wonder why they have not done it yet I don't understand. There are plenty of third party ones.

This was 2010? And both Steve and Scott are no longer at Apple.

The sad thing is that the current calculator on the iPhone isn't anything special.

How difficult is it to simply include that one?

I know there are tons of calculator apps.
But we spend $600+ on an iPad (which is positioned as a computer), and Apple won't provide a basic calculator to open up alongside another app.

Meh. Tons of good free apps. I'm not bothered by it. My time/energy/attention is better spent elsewhere.

While it was a slight annoyance, I've adjusted and don't even think about it anymore. I just use my phone, and if that's not around, I use Siri.

Not the only app missing from iPad that exists on iPhone. I understand they didn't like they way it looked on iPad so not included but why did they never create one. I would guess that people who developed calculator apps wouldn't be happy.
As said plenty of free ones.

May be Apple assume you get all their products, so, if you need calculator, you should use the iPhone, which has similar form factor at normal calculator.

Or, they think that the iPad is a Pro machine, should not be used to do this kind of simple calculation, what a waste? :p

30% is the reason there's no native calc app.
