... that "parks the heads" when not in use, similar to a Macbook Pro? I wonder about the safety of data when transporting these so-called "portable" drives. Should this be an issue or am I paranoid?

All hard drives park the heads when powered down, so you don't have to worry about minor jostling bouncing the heads on the drive platter. You still don't want to drop it, however, but you knew that already. 🙂
