That was not a virus.

Leap requires user interaction in order to infect a machine, as the user receiving an instant message containing the worm will have to extract the executable from the archive and then run as admin. When run, it appears immediately that it is not a harmless jpeg file but in fact a malicious binary file. It runs in command/shell mode calling a terminal session for it to execute.

THANK you. I was trying to think of the name of this one when I wrote that earlier post. Great example of only being infected under very very specific circumstances, and even then wasn't that damaging - well, unless you're in root...

Believe me, I've tried.

You could always go for the jugular as ask what they pay him for if he's not up-to-date on his research.
Has he actually read macvirus.org?
Has he seen that the average time between posts is measured in months? And pleeeease tell me this isn't his only source.

I'm in IT, and for me, IT folks shooting off their mouths for ego trips, or God forbid, shoring up OS Religious beliefs, really p**ses me off.

Bartelby,

I've got the same problem with this tech friend of ours. He is quite sure there is a virus for OS X and he told me that they brought out some Anti-Virus to sort it out and that we'll be seeing all kinds of things soon.

****. There is no such thing, its all Proof of Concept if there is anything at all, or sensationalism coming form Norton, Symantec et al to get us to buy their crapware.

Right, he's going to part his body as of tomorrow, or whenever I see him next. Smug fool.

He's so stupid that he says that Macs are poor for images and he prefers to use a Windows machine to surf.

I'll stop now.:)

lol, don't treat an OS as a myth or legend or religion, its codes, zillions of them, there is nothing in the codes that is virus-proof. And when enough ppl have resources to check those codes, u know whats gonna happen. You can write my words down.

A side note, I guess OSX does have holes, since they keep making security patches, of course, they might not be "virus", as you might say :p .

and according to http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/...g/2006/07/macinenterprise_mac_os_x_virus.html
there are worms, trojans and various security holes, guess now ppl like to divide virus into even fine categories, and say worms aren't virus anymore, or whatever. I wonder when excluding trojans and worms from virus category, how many active virus does Windows XP have now? Who have the #? (PS, don't bother with ancient stuff like CIH, jusr recent active stuff would be good :D)

A security hole is not a virus. I think that's what you were trying to say. It's hard to tell through that dense fog of punctuation-less poorly capitalize text and random abbreviations.

Thanks very much for clearing that up. What about denial-of-service attacks?

a dos attack according to wikipedia is
Force the victim computer(s) to reset or consume its resources such that it can no longer provide its intended service.
Obstruct the communication media between the intended users and the victim so that they can no longer communicate adequately.

Now this is something os x can't do much about. As when someone floods the connection coming in os x can't stop that only you ISP can. Now using resources it can't do much about that. Just continually blocking the requests as they are usual malformed anyway. But the CPU still has to do the work of looking at it.

so basically spyware and trojans can affect a mac, but viruses cant? so that means that i can get spyware in a mac?

sorry im a newb and not really a tech guy.

It has to be written for os x so your standard windows ones are useless. That being said almost all of them will require you to type your password to install. So just be careful what you download. Get it from a trusted site such as versiontracker.com
