    Hey folks -

Im used to jailbreaking my 3G, and I just upgraded. However, I can't do my normal routine for jailbreaking (iReb + Custom Firmware) because there is no iReb for the 3GS and when i try to shift+restore, I get a Error 1603 after about 10 minutes of waiting.

So I tried Blackra1n, and low and behold - it works! However, I'm not too thrilled about having to re-run it after every hard reboot, as Im on the road a lot.

Do I have any alternatives? I don't have access to a mac, but I DO have copies of 3GS Custom Firmware...I just can't get the phone to take them! I keep getting 1600/1603 errors.

    Thanks

The tethered jailbreak is not a result of blackra1n; it is a result of the new version of iBoot on your phone. Currently there is no known way of hacking the new version of iBoot to boot a modified firmware. You can read more about it here.

Just a thought.. I have not tried this yet but I don't see why it wouldn't work.. Im used to using it on mac but it's for windows to..
It's called iRecovery. It's basically an app that jailbreakers used back in the 1.0-2.0 days to put phones in recovery mode or to get them to boot up. And actually. I used it on the 3.0 firmware to get my phone to boot up.. So look into that. I'm 90% sure that will work and by boot up I mean basically making the jailbreak tethered

Uh, what? The OP wants an untethered jailbreak. iRecovery helps none. Blackra1n kicks it out of Recovery Mode just fine. That's not the problem. The OP was asking if there are any alternatives to Blackra1n that are not tethered.

Well if u use irecovery and I'm not sure how it is on windows. But on mac. Type the command fsboot ( I believe that's the command ) it will not only kick the phone out of recovery mode but it will also make the phone boot up into normal mode after each hard reset. Theirfore using these 2 program makes the jailbreak tethered.

How do I know irecovery can make the phone boot up into normal mode everytime? I upgraded to 3.1 as soon as it came out. Within a couple days I wanted to downgrade back to 3.0 but couldn't because apple wasn't signig that firmware anymore. Luckily had my keys backed up with saurik. Went threw the process. My phone wouldn't boot up because baseband was higher than the one that came with the firmware. I could use purplera1n and get the phone to boot after each start. But after I used I recovery. After running the command. My phone booted up with no problems from then on

gigapocket1: You didn't have a tethered jailbreak, you were in a boot loop. They are very different things. iRecovery is a great tool for kicking a phone out of a boot loop, but it cannot make a tethered jailbreak untethered. Please stop trying to argue that it can.

Unfortunately the only alternative is getting a hold of an older/earlier production 3GS. New ones come with a new iBoot where a tethered jailbreak is necessary.

    Iphone 3G jailbreak non-tethered

Hi, I have an Iphone 3G, with the last firmware update.
I think its 3.1.2 ?? anyways its the last one.

I would like to know if there an application like Blackrain to jailbreak my iphone, and be able to shutdown my iphone, or waste all battery power... without losing my jailbreak.

    Thanks.

Also.. is there a way to backup EVERYTHING before jailbreaking?..
maybe if something goes wrong, Be able to restore where i was.

Tethered jailbreak is only for the 3GS, if you have a 3G you will be fine. You can use blackra1n or Pwnage Tool.

If you are not jailbroken now, just sync your iPhone to back everything up. Songs, movies etc are not backed up, but will sync back over if you need to restore your device.

    Blackra1n doesn't cause tethering in a jailbreak.
You can use blackra1n fine because you cannot 'get' a tethered JB. Only new version 3GS's will SHIP with the new security measures. Your bootrom will not be updated.

Pkgbackup is a program that syncs serial/app information about your JB programs into a contact entry and can be used to re-install all of these apps after a restore.

lol, that does make a lot of sense.

the ol' brain just jumped to pkgbackup when he asked for an easy way to restore stuff...had no idea he would need reminding of itunes :p

Well, to be fair, it only says "backing up 'your iPhone'" once every time you connect your phone to your computer.
