Is there a reason we cannot change @me Apple IDs?

Even an @me Apple ID created through iCloud cannot be modified. If I called Apple would they be able to change it manually? @gmail, @yahoo, and everything else can be changed, but never to @me either! I don't understand why they continue to be unable to be modified.
