Hi,

I plan to buy a new 27" 5K iMac with 256 GB SSD option.
But before I buy I have a question about the possibility to install a SATA drive later.
I know that there is a SATA HD in the Fusion Drive iMacs, that I could replace with a SSD.
But is that SATA connector also there if I buy a SSD only iMac?

owc says it is nt possible to add a drive later unless it came th a drive originally. that means your best bet is a 2tb or 3tb fusion. i also think the fusion is a better choice than the 256gb flash as that will run out of space quickly. however if you can swing 512gb flash, that's a great option (but you can't add a harddrive later) finally, adding a harddive later, even if you have a fusion drive to upgrade, is a huge, huge pita.

Thank you!

I just read in the comments on that site, that there are no cables for a SATA HD if you order a SSD-only mac! Even the mounting frame is not included then.

So if anyone wants to internally upgrade the iMac by himself on a later point, you should better opt for the Fusion Drive instead of a SSD only iMac!

I was curious about the same thing with last years model. Did some research and found this discussion:

So at least with last years model you could buy the SATA cable from iFixit and install a second drive if you wanted. The mounting bracket was even included in the SSD only model.

I assume it's still possible and will consider it myself if I run out of space.
