The wife has an iphone 8, gone through 2 batteries and she needs to be getting a new phone. Does Apple make anything about the size of the iphone 8 or slightly bigger? She doesn't want a new purse. It has been an interesting 46 years with her.

Yep, the iPhone SE will be pretty much identical to the iPhone 8.
The iPhone 13/14/15 is only slightly bigger with a much larger display (due lack of top and bottom bezels).

To answer your question, the latest iPhone SE or an iPhone 13 Mini would be your best bet.
we finally reached a compromise. she can get a bigger purse and then enter the modern age of the 16

If she tends to keep her phones long term, then the iPhone 15 Pro is the best for her, it is slightly bigger than the 8 but by a small margin as can be seen here…
