If not, is it possible for a company, let’s say Ecobee, to add support for it via a firmware update? Curious.

Let us get this straight. You want to play music from your thermostat because it contains a kick-ass set of speakers?

Maybe the OP meant HomeKit instead of AirPlay.

If that is the case, Ecobee already supports HomeKit.

This isn't as strange a question as some of you think. Ecobee4 can already play music/podcasts etc. using Alexa. Sound quality is reputably garbage though.

I didn’t know that.

I have an Ecobee, but one without Alexa. I think it is the Ecobee 3 lite.

The new Ecobee has Siri 7 can do Apple Music, so can't it control the speakers that are on the network? So use the Ecobee to change songs etc by voice control?

and yes, temperature immersion for movies will be coming...

While none of the smoke detectors support AirPlay 2, the new Ecobee (the one with glass front) has Bluetooth so you could stream audio from other devices.

As for people criticizing OP for wanting to stream audio from thermostat, I think it's fine for non-music contents like audiobooks and podcasts.

At some point, this is getting ridiculous. I can just imagine someone pulling up a chair in their hallway to listen to a podcast on a thermostat. Maybe I can play movies from my dishwasher!!! The steamier the better!
