Is there a USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 adapter for an iMac mid-2015 Retina 27" 15,1 ((A1419, EMC 2806)

I understand if the Thunderbolt 3 device to be connected needs power then a DOCK with power is required.

Of course, a Thunderbolt 2 cable is required for any adapter/dock connection to the iMac 15,1.

And if there is not an available unpowered adapter is there a powered dock that will adapt USB-C to the iMac's Thunderbolt 2 ports?

Apple support pages and Amazon buyers of the Apple adapter MMEL2AM/A does NOT list the iMac mid-2015 15,1 as compatible. See the link below.

Thanks....if no such hardware is available I expect a USB-C to USB 3.0 will be required to the iMac 15,1

I read your post a couple times, but am not really understanding what you are asking, but you can use the TB3/TB2 bidirectional adapter to connect a TB3 device to TB2 or TB1 Macs.

If the TB3 device does not have its own power adapter, then a TB3 dock with an external power source can be used to power the TB3 device.

Keep in mind that you will, at minimum, also need a TB1/2 cable to go from your Mac to the bidirectional adapter.

Thanks, Juicy Box. Your reply is exactly correct regarding power needs and cable needs.

My question & need is whether this MMEL2AM/A adapter is working for any iMac mid-2015 27" Retina 15,1 owner since Apple documentation does not include the iMac 15,1 mid-2015 model as one in which the MMEL2AM/A adapter actually is compatible.

The Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter will work with any Mac that has Thunderbolt 1 or 2 as long as it's running Sierra or later. What device are you trying to connect to your Mac?
Apple provides more detail about the adapter here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207266

Please check this Apple documentation and view the computer models supported under "COMPATIBILITY" as iMac 15,1 is NOT listed

Yes, but the adapter works with the 2015 iMac just fine. The link I sent covers the Macs the adapter works with: any Mac that has Thunderbolt 1 or 2 and is running macOS Sierra or later. I have personally used the adapter with many Macs that are not listed on the page from the Apple Store that you've found.

OK. I'll give it a try with a peripheral not needing power over the connection.

That document only lists supported Macs. It doesn't mean the adapter doesn't work with unsupported Macs.
Notice that it doesn't list anything before 2016.

The adapter works with my 2013 iMac and it worked with a 2015 MacBook Pro that I had.

Thanks for the replies.

Is there a preferred usable Thunderbolt Hub and/or Thunderbolt Dock that is available to add powered USB-C (Thunderbolt 3 and or 4 ports) to my mid-2015 iMac 15,1 27" Retina that currently has only USB 3, Thunderbolt 2 (unpowered) and Ethernet ports?

(I understand I will need a Thunderbolt 2 cable and Thunderbolt 3 to 2 bidirectional adapter to complete the connections to docks/hubs.)

Your Thunderbolt 2 (unpowered) port should have enough power for bus powered Thunderbolt 2 devices such as the Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter or the Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter and maybe some drives?

Any Thunderbolt 3 dock or device with a downstream Thunderbolt port should work. Some docks may have one or more non-Thunderbolt USB-C ports. The HP Thunderbolt Dock G2 has two non-Thunderbolt USB-C ports.

A Thunderbolt 4 hub/dock doesn't work with my Thunderbolt 1 iMac (running Big Sur 11.2 or later or Monterey) but it might work with a Thunderbolt 2 Mac.

The Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter is the only such adapter that is bidirectional. It also is usually less expensive than the non-bidirectional adapters.
