Is there a way to add .avi file to itunes lib without conversion?

quicktime can play it but I cannot add it to itunes lib when I drag it to itunes.

I know I could convert the file but is there any way to add it to lib without conversion ? It would be so much easier.

you can put avi's in itunes library. it creates a reference file (mov) to the original avi
