Is there a way to choose which format you receive through iTunes?

Hello. I'd really like to gift an album to my boyfriend but right now my only possible way of doing so is through iTunes. I'm not sure what brand of music player it is but I know that it doesn't recognize mp4's, just mp3's.

So, when I gift the album, is there a way for either him or me to specify which type of format he is entitled to? And if so, say he were to download iTunes to receive his album, would he be able to add it to his music player?

... after you selected the mp3 encoder (and chose the bitrate) via preferences > general > import settings
