is there a way to decrease the brightness level beyond the lowest setting?

i sometimes use my mbp in a dark room and find the lowest brightness setting to be to bright. is there any way to get the screen even more dim?

You could try Shady. It does not actually alter the brightness, but it has a similar effect...

Hold down Option-Shift-Brightness Down and it lets you go increments of 4. You can do Option-Shift-Brightness Up and it also does the same thing.
