Is there a way to disable iTunes when inserting a CD?

I have been ripping CDs to a portable hard drive on my iMac using a third party software program called "Max". I find it frustrating/infuriating that every time I insert a CD iTunes activates. Each time I have to close out iTunes before using the Max ripping program. I have gone into system preferences in iTunes but have been unsuccessful in disabling iTunes. Is there any way to do so?
