Is there a way to do this? Help me justify buying an iPad.

Right now I currently use a Lenovo S10 netbook for certain aspects of my work. In short, it's set up to check an email address every 10 minutes and then it plays a .mp3 file when I get new mail. It then repeats the .mp3 file every X minutes until it has been answered. For this I use the Windows program Pop Pepper.

So... is there any way to do this on the iPad? I've never owned an Apple product and I can't really find the answer to my question anywhere. If there's a way to set this up I can justify buying it for work and selling my netbook... If not, guess I'm stuck and no iPad for me.

    Thanks

If what you described is the key feature you're concerned with, just stick with your netbook.

That sounds like something you'd want to keep running in the background while you do other things, so you won't be able to do it until the multitasking update this fall.

I don't need this to work in the background... I just need it to work when I'm not near the device. It doesn't have to multitask.

    HAHAHA

Yeah dude, if you're number one deciding feature is for your computer to be annoy you constantly about emails using an mp3 file..You don't need an iPad.

Maybe you should just develop better habits of opening email? XD

Well if you just want to be reminded of your email there's always the badges that show how many unread messages you have, and it does play a noise when you first receive a message, although no it does not continue to remind you after that.

No the iPad cannot do that. And if you're confused, post #2 also answered you but apparently we need to spell things out a bit more.

An app like the 99 cent "Mail Notifier" app might work for you - but getting an iPad for just this functionality is overkill.

No, you cannot. The mail application plays a sound byte when it receives new mail, but only when you receive it. It does, however, display your unread messages in a "badge" on the mail icon. You say you want it to do this for when you're not in the room? Well the iPad speakers won't really resonate past one room, so it won't be able to call you from far away.
If you want to just "know" if you got an email when you get back, though, the badge system should work just fine.

Pay me $499 and I'll check your inbox every 5 minutes and call you when you get a new message... :p

    Actually-
There appears to be a third party iPhone application that you can set up to deliver a pop-up message as well as a "ringtone" like you so described everytime you get a message. Since it pops-ups unless you click "cancel" or "read", it basically does what you want, i suppose.

But seriously-This seems like it'd just be really annoying.

(Also the service is apparently .99 a month.)

    Thanks.

For those of you who just must know why I need it... I currently use Pop Pepper as an alarm to wake me up in the middle of the night if there are any network issues at work. It's not my main reasoning for getting any device, but for me it is something that's needed in any device I buy.

The pad doesn't keep a WiFi connection active, you'd need the 3G model. Isn't there some fake push mail apps that send you a text when you get an email?

I would use the netbook at night, then use the iPad elsewhere...

No one uses phones anymore? heh.

Just wanted to add that once a jailbreak is out, that would almost certainly be something you could do with the pad... There are all kind of weird notifiers out unofficially...

    It doesn't?

I'm pretty sure mine does - I have an alarm clock app that also displays my facebook notifications, I don't think it could be getting that info without active Wifi.
