Yes, if you use CMD+SHIFT+3 or CMD+SHIFT+4, the screenshots will be saved onto the Desktop.
Taking screenshots in Mac OS X

F3 and F4 are used for other things, like Exposé and Dashboard.

I forgot I had grabbox running, and so it saved them in a sub-folder of dropbox instead of the desktop ... Thanks!
