To OP:

I think everyone knows by now, but Mac screens "dim" over time…as they are programmed to. Ever notice how the "NEW" ones 'seem' brighter?

They are. ;)

The screens "dim" themselves to make you want to buy a new one, sooner. If you didn't know…now you do.

Assume you have some evidence for this???

Of course you don't it's nonsense...

LCDs do dim with time as the backlights get old but they are fine for years and it's only in comparison with better newer screens that they look dimmer.

Turn the lights off in the room. Take the display apart and discard the rear metal housing. Get a few 2000w studio lights and sit them behind the LCD.

Or try getting an eye examination.

I don't know why, but the screen seems dim to me at max brightness. Is there some kind of software tweak I could use to bump it up a bit more, or is it at the hardware limit?

Yes, if you go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES, click ENERGY SAVER. There are settings for POWER ADAPTER and BATTERY. Select BATTERY, then unclick the box that says, "Slightly dim the display while on battery power." :)

This sounds dumb and basic when I type it out, but I find that (depending on the use) I can go maybe 25% lower in brightness level and have the same perceived brightness in light mode vs dark mode.

You guys are respond to a thread from 2012
Haha, oops. This surfaced for me because the guy above me somehow dredged it up from three years ago.

I'm not sure if this happened or just me imagining things, but...

I usually run my brightness around 75% when plugged in and started to notice that my display was running a bit dim for whatever reason. I didn't do anything about it however.

A few weeks back I realized my battery was bulging as my trackpad wasn't clicking properly, so I replaced the battery, and did SMC and the other memory reset.

Pretty sure those controller resets corrected my brightness issue, but again, could just be me imagining things.
