Everybody will be too busy scrambling to get their pre-orders to concern themselves with what's available or not.

Yeah right. The general rule of thumb with Apple is: If it's convenient to the customer, it probably doesn't exist.

As a general rule the most expensive items are the easiest to find. So the locked 256 GB phones will be the one to go for. Good luck...

There is no way of knowing this. It's just a matter of ordering the phone you want as quickly as possible and hoping from there.
