Hey there, folks!

I have massive mbox archives (3-5 gigs a piece) in which many years of email have been stored. I know I can import them to browse through the contents, but that is a major pain in the ass, and could potentially take hours.

What I would rather do is open the mbox file (not in a text editor, as said... big file), and browse the archive in a similar fashion to the way you could do the same with pst files in outlook.

I read somewhere that you used to be able to do that with the Mail app, but I can see no way to accomplish this in SL.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try out MailSteward - you can use it for free up to 15k emails I believe and can read mbox files.
