I am a casual user, who dabbles in small amounts of Content creation.

Both of my Macs are going strong at the moment. 2014 i7 macbook pro, and 2012 i7 mac mini with 1TB SSD, and 16 GB ram. I have to decide which one gets the upgrade.

My only reason to upgrade being that neither of them can keep up with the footage my cameras are capable of. My main need for upgrading would be the ability to edit/playback/display 4k videos.

Anyway the question I have is, if there is much of a performance delta between the MBP, and MM? Since I will only upgrade one right now, I am leaning towards a relatively base MBP with more SSD.

Would it be reasonable to buy it and use it as a desktop 99.9% of the time?

Performance wise everything I have read is that they are essentially the same with a very slight edge to the mini. I went with a Mac mini and a 27inch 4k IPS HDR screen. I prefer the larger screen and cost was less than the MacBook Pro for the monitor plus the Mac mini. I had an old apple keyboard and mouse already so I didnt need to make that purchase. I have a 2016 MacBook Pro that meets my portable needs.

One thing to keep in mind is that the mini doesn't have a battery. If you plan to use a MacBook as a desktop 99% of the time, it won't be a great thing for the battery and may impact its lifespan. Plus, your MacBook is newer. I'd go for the mini.

If both of your Macs are "going strong" at the moment, I wouldn't rush into an "upgrade" yet.

I'd sit back for about 3-4 more months, and see how things work out with the new m1 Macs.

Then, I'd make a buying decision -- having become wiser about the possible choices.

Using my MscBook always connected to power ruined the battery. Reason I bought mini last month.

Check new AS m1 forum. Also 2022 should see A16X chip. Worth saving and planning. Maybe the iMac when it comes mid 2021.

Wish we knew when mac pro - workstation - comes out and configuration. Dual m1's? 2 x 32GB RAM? 4 x 16GB? Call it the M2X or A15MX?

I'm also really thinking going with the mini. Because i use my current MBP mostly at home except when i travel which is less likely for next few months. Even when i travel i don't really use the laptop much, i do editing but when i get back home.
