Is there any help for a 1st Gen iPad?

I'm pretty sure I bought this in the summer or 2010.

Now, I can surf the web without it freezing and crashing. Reading magazine or pdfs -- same thing. It's driving me nuts.

Is there anything to do to help this? If I delete unused Apps? (The capacity is 58 GB and I've got 16.2 GB available.) Running IOS version 5.1.1 (which I think is the most recent that will download to this.)

Or do I just throw it out the window and buy a new one? What's the estimated usable life of the current iPads?

If you can do all that without freezing/crashing why is it driving you nuts?

I have tried to reduce the apps to the minimum, cleared Safari cache, deleted the non essential bookmarks, and it behaves a little better, but sometimes I would throw out of the window
