I just had my iPhone 3GS factory unlocked by AT&T and was wondering if there any need for SAM/SAMperfs for factory unlocked iPhone?

You can activate with any sim and you are factory unlocked.

It's nice for confirming the unlock if you don't have a foreign sim. Just set Sam to use a random country/carrier and see if it activates. If it does, it's unlocked. If it doesn't, it's not.

Buy an inactive AT&T sim on eBay and use it for activations = problem solved.

Or you can walk in a store an=nd pick up one that's active. I bought one for $10 from T-mobile made a quick call right from the store!
