Hi there,

is there any (external) solution to increase the refreshrate higher than 60Hz in desktop mode. Reason: Well I got this 144Hz screen and I really would like to use the smoother screen, as I have it under Win10.

thx alot,
Markus

The Mac Mini 2012 has Intel HD 4000 graphics, I think. Which can output 144Hz, but not under macOS, and if you tried playing games on it I'm fairly sure your system would grind to a halt pretty quickly.

In System Preferences -> Displays, hold down Alt/Option key and click on Scaled to see more settings. One setting is a checkbox that says something like "Show ..." (I don't know what it says in English). Check that box and you should have the option to change refresh rate.

Thunderbolt eGPU would be the only way I could think of.
The internal graphics won't do it on macOS.
I'm not sure it will do 1440p at 60Hz, I was wanting to say it is either 50 or 59Hz @ 1440.

Hi,

it does 1440p at 60Hz, yes. Games are not an option. I long for the smoothness on desktop.
On prefs it says XF270HU as it is an Acer 27inch 144Hz screen with this model name. With opt-key down, I can choose different resolutions, yes, but the refresh rate selector is always greyed out.

So, do you know any cheap solutions to run 2560x1440 on mac mini 2012 with higher refreshrates around 120-144Hz?
I dont know where I would start looking, since I never had any experience with externel GPU solutions.

thx

What @lupinglade said. There have been plenty of reports of the 2014 mini struggling with basic 4K usage despite official support. Even some 2018 mini owners have opted for an eGPU to get consistently good performance at that resolution.
