Hello, I'm currently using the Club3D CAC-1333 to output my PS5 to my Studio Display with a 1080p video signal. A lot of the discussion about this solution comes from before the PS5 supported 1440p output (which was added in a firmware update). I'm wondering if there's any way to get 1440p output to the Studio Display?

Currently, the PS5 test for 1440p fails when connected to the ASD. But I'm not really sure why this wouldn't work. Can anyone provide a technical explanation as to why it doesn't? I thought maybe the newer adapter, CAC-1336, would work, but checking reviews for that online I can't find confirmation that it would get 1440p, or even that it works with the ASD/PS5 combination.

What EDID does a PC or Mac see when connected via HDMI with the CAC-1333 to the Studio Display?

If the EDID doesn't show a 1440p mode, then maybe you can put an EDID emulator between the PS5 and the CAC-1333 such as one of the Dr HDMI devices?

When I connect to the Studio Display with the CAC-1333, I see the resolutions I would expect to see based on the adapter's specs, including 1440p:

2560x1440 might actually be a HiDPI mode that uses a 5120x2880 frame buffer but outputs to 4K (since the CAC-1333 is limited to HDMI 2.0).
Use SwitchResX or BetterDisplay to get the EDID.

So, I haven't used BetterDisplay in a while but if I tried disabling HiDPI mode, setting the filter in the Display Mode list to LoDPI only, and I still saw 2K as an option:

After enabling LoDPI 1440p, which I guess is "true" 1440p, I tried plugging in the PS5 but it again defaulted to 1080p and the 1440p test failed. I just wish I could understand why this doesn't work, after all HDMI 2.0 should be able to support 2K60 right?

Seem to get the same data for both retrieval methods. This is when connected with the CAC-1333:

EDIT: Oh, when I connect my Mac directly with the included Thunderbolt cable, I get EDID version 1.4. So I guess HDMI 1.3 is not capable of 2K60? PS5 probably gets 1.3 as well and can only do 1080p. But why is this HDMI 2.0 adapter delivering 1.3?

Here you go. I assumed that was unnecessary and just contained the same info as what's in the table.

Alright. Getting closer. Now paste it as text instead of a screenshot so I don't have to type it manually.

Sure thing :):

(although just saying Preview is pretty good at getting text from images now)

That's not the same as the one in the picture. That's the EDID of the Apple Studio Display.

And Preview doesn't recognize all the text in the picture as text (same as Safari).

That's strange, I definitely had it connected via the adapter. Trying again:

That looks like the correct EDID.
Both EDIDs have a 2560x1440 60Hz mode.
I don't know why all the modes have slightly different timings.

Does the "Direct I2C communication" method produce the same base64 strings?

What does the "the PS5 test for 1440p fails" look like? Is there a message?

1.3 is the version of the EDID. It is not the version of the HDMI. I think usually HDMI uses EDID 1.3 and DisplayPort uses EDID 1.4.

1440p60 requires much less bandwidth than HDMI 2.0. It should be doable with HDMI 1.3 and HDMI 1.4. 1080p60 only requires HDMI 1.0.

I'm not familiar enough with BetterDisplay to know if you've actually obtained 1440p60 with the HDMI adapter. I would use SwitchResX, double click the selected display mode in the Current Resolutions menu to view the timing info. Note the pixel clock value.
I think BetterDisplay has a command line? That might give better info.

If you can get 1440p to work from the Mac, then it should be workable from the PS5 but you may need an adapter to modify the EDID such as the "Dr HDMI 4K" or similar device. I have the "Dr HDMI 8K". I can change the EDID using a web browser. I don't have a PS5 to test though so I don't know which EDID would work. The Dr HDMI 8K is limited to 256 byte EDIDs but that's all you need for most uses.
