For example, a swipe up gesture from the bottom of the screen, a la Blackberry 10.

Or is this impossible due to hardware limitations?

No well unless the screen is active for a notification of power being connected then you can swipe

There's a tweak called VUnlock in Cydia. It uses the volume buttons to unlock the phone. Don't know if it will work on 6.0-6.1

The screen would have to be on, but you can set up activator to unlock the device with swipe gestures from the lock screen.

This is doable on Android so it's not a crazy idea. It's also doable on the new BB Z10 but I'm not sure if there's any extra hardware for that. On my Nexus 4 I can swipe on the screen either horizontally or vertically and it will turn it on.

Yes, I got this thought from watching the BB10 video. I had no idea Androids could do that as well. Thanks for the video. The swipe up to close was already done by Zephyr months ago. But swipe to wake is still nice. Potential to use the iPhone without having to press a button anymore, coupled with activator and Zephyr. Maybe some dev can look into it and see if it's a possibility.

I can understand if all your buttons are broken, but what other reason is there to want that? Not being snarky, just curious. It can't save time or anything, and pressing a button isn't exactly hard.

It's useful for when you have the phone down on a table and you can just swipe across the screen to turn it on. It's also just easier to trigger whatever way you're holding the phone.

Also useful if your button isn't functioning anymore ;)

Cool beans, I can see that being useful for some, not something I need, but that's what's great about jail breaking.....the variety of ways ppl modify to suit their needs/tastes.

Probably not what you want, but just an idea, you could use Siri, install hands free control and tell Siri to do something (open mail?). Like I said, not what you mean but an option nonetheless.

Would be quite cool for a tweak to add that control to Siri. 'Siri'..beep.....'unlock'....unlocks phone.

Personal preference. Same as your reason for not seeing the reason.

honestly that's my favorite root app on my nexus 4 and I really wish I could do the same with my iPhone. You don't realize how useful and quick gestures are until you use it for a day.

Swipe to wake, patern unlock, in an app and locked one handed without having to move my hand around the phone.

Silently praying for gestures in iOS7

Hands free control will allow Siri to wake up the phone when it's off it's listening all the time so just saying its name wakes up the phone, don't know about the battery usage though cant seem to get a straight answer from everyone so e say its fine some say its killing their battery but you could try it if you simply have to have a way of doing it

This ^

It works fine on my 4S 6.1.2. YMMV.

Edit: I should add, however, that the phone is technically not "off" but in sleep mode. My Blackberry had a timed wake-up feature - but again, the BB was only in sleep mode. The only way you could truly shut off a Blackberry was to physically remove its battery.

i could do without it. i butt dial enough people that i don't need my phone waking up everytime it moves around in my pocket.
