I'm confused as to what digital outputs there are on a 2010 Mac Mini. The 4 USB and Firewire 800 are obvious but is there an optical out that can be connected to a DAC? I can't see any way to connect a toslink cable. the Everymac site says -

Connectivity includes an HDMI and a Mini DisplayPort, a Firewire "800" port, four USB 2.0 ports, combined "audio line in (digital/analog)" and combined "audio line out/headphone (digital/analog)" minijacks, a 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet port, built-in AirPort Extreme (802.11a/b/g/n), and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, in addition to an SD (SDXC) card slot.

So where is the alleged "audio line out digital/analog"? Surely a stereo minijack isn't compatible with a Toslink cable? Or is this something to do with the HDMI output? Is it a case of an adapter? And what settings are used in "Preferences - Sound"?

Please help me see the light here!

Thanks - I see, an adapter. Does the optical signal actually go through the end of the mini-jack then?

So if you plug in an optical cable, does that output then appear in Preferences - Sound?
