I setup the ATV app on my Samsung TV, and it was kludgy, and just felt weird. I plugged the ATV back in and everything was back to goodness. Happy days!!!

I'd also say that at least if you use the real ATV appliance, it should support the ATV software for a few years. A 'smart TV' might drop the support in a heartbeat because they get into a tiff with Apple, or Apple just drops their, and possible everyone else's, license to have it in their devices.

I purchased our current Samsung 4K Smart TV several years ago on Black Friday. I never setup/connected the TV to our wifi. It's been connected to our ATV 4K since day 1. My wife and I prefer the UI and the seamless integration with our other Apple products.

Mine is probably the same vintage. Believe me, you aren't missing anything. Except for a weird UI, and some things not working quite right. Anyone that has experience with the Apple TV appliance UI, should really pass on most/all of the built-in ATV applets. It's just not the same. Kind of like 'simulated'.

I've read the Smart TV UI isn't that great and that's one of the reasons why I never set it up when I bought the TV. Completely happy with our current ATV and will purchase another one when our current boxes go.

I had heard rumors, and wanted to see 'how bad it really is'.

We also needed another Apple TV, so it worked, except it didn't. Went to get the new ATV box the next day, and, if you want to do something right, don't simulate it...
