When I am on the go I often check emails which have arrived, but will not answer them on the iphone - but leave until when I am back on my on my iPad Pro with Smart Keyboard. Is there any automatic way to read email on mail, but not mark as read?

It is annoying to have to go back and mark as unread every mail opened. Otherwise it may get forgotten and left unanswered.

Can't do it with stock app. There might be a third party app that does it, just not familiar with one (eg. Google's mail app also marks as read any read message).

Some apps do have a snooze feature.

Dumb question time...

Re: "have to go back and mark as unread": are you going to the list of messages and swiping each or tapping edit, tap messages, tap Mark > Unread? If so, why not just tap the flag when in a message and mark as unread, or simply flag, then access the Flagged mailbox later on the iPad?

You could try 3D Touch on the email you want to read so the preview pops open, but don't 3D Touch too hard otherwise that'll just open the email as per normal.

As others have said, I don’t believe there is a way to do that in the mail app as you would be in the minority of people that would want such a feature. I have a co-worker that used email similarly and while helping him set up a new email address he was shocked when I told him what he was doing was extremely uncommon. He wanted to use a “pop3” style where every device is independent, but the imap style (every device knows what the other has looked at or done) has almost completely taken over.

An alternative would be utilizing a folder in your email called “To-do” or something like that. That way you can check emails on the go and if you come across an important one you can just move it to this folder and respond when you are back with your iPad.

Easiest is just marking them as unread. I use Spark and my inbox is currently zero. As soon as I’m done with a email I either delete it or archive. So my inbox is kinda like a todo list. Important emails get pinned to the top. In spark you can set it so only unread or all emails with show a badge.

Just started doing this yesterday. Not easy but I need less email in my everyday life. Archiving is the best!

Re: archiving: yes. Both my Personal and Job related email accounts are Gmail. I have setup a ton of filters on Gmail site to move majority of noise to "All Mail" (aka archive), keeping the primary Inboxes relatively clean and not blowing up with notifications.

And as imaccooper said, also have a "needs response" mailbox if mails are pilling up and want to deal with later.
