1tb hdd

Hi, if you're looking for a 1TB HDD, you could get a kit from OWC (Other World Computing) and use your current HDD as an external one, with either USB or Firewire connection. I'm gonna get a Hybrid Seagate Momentus XT kit, they are a lot faster as the have a SSD part and spin at 7200RPM. The biggest drive is 500GB so I think that's out of the question for you; if not, get one of those!

You can go here for USB enclosure http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Se...Popularity|1&Ne=5000&N=100048&Ntt=DIY+Express

And here for firewire http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Se...pularity|1&Ne=5000&N=100048&Ntt=DIY+On-The-Go

...or you could buy everything cheaper on Newegg.

The reviewer is wrong. It is fast enough for most people and I say that as someone who has multiple SSD equipped Macs. More cache is nice but 8 is plenty. But i would look at the new Seagate 1 TB first. Its been out for a few months, is thinner than the old Seagate 1 TB drive, and benchmarks faster than the Samsung as well as some of the 7200 rpm drives people here are claiming are faster.

I want to buy the following 2.5 inch 9mm HDD and replace the current drive in my pre-unibody Macbook Pro. It would be my main system (OS) drive. Is it going to be fast enough or am I asking for trouble?

I know it will fit but that's about it.

The drive is the Samsung SpinPoint SATA 5400rpm 8 MB Cache 1 TB 2.5-Inch Hard Drive and the link is below:

Any help would be much appreciated :)

Thanks for the link to ebay, it is a tempting idea indeed. What did you do with you DVD drive once removed. Can you put that in an external case too to use separately? There are still times when I use mine, albeit infrequently.

Also, since we have the same mac, you have the dreaded 8600M GT chip as well. Just wondered if you have had to have it replaced yet? (I have once).

Thanks again! You have given me something to think about

I did nothing with my Superdrive yet. I might be putting it on eBay for a small price but you can definitively put in in a external enclosure and keep using it that way ! I would probably buy an external optical drive (new) because imo Superdrives kind of suck (mine works one time each 10 times...)

I also had the 8600M GT chip changed...just a couple of weeks before my Applecare ended....I really got lucky on that one !

Keep me posted on what your final decision will be for your upgrade, and good luck !

Thanks. Really considering a 256GB SSD + a 750GB HDD combo for my 17" MBP.

I myself am considering this similar setup. Thinking of the 1tb scorpio drive and the SSD I'm not sure of yet. It will depend on the size and cost.

So the Hard Drive, SSD, this thing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/290589716133?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649, that's all I need?

I'm planning on keeping my superdrive as an external. Good call on the SuperDrives sucking though, whenever I burn something I often get the verification failed thing. I thought it was something else, not the actual drive.

o_O No.

You don't need an SSD for a boot drive. Up until yesterday I booted off of a stock 5400 rpm apple drive. It worked fine, just wasn't performing well enough for my video editing work.

I used to too. It was horrible. In this day and age, unless you're using a sub-$500 notebook, there is no reason to not upgrade to an SSD.
