Update on this - it's not a dead pixel because when the MBP is completely off and the light hits the black screen a certain way, I can still see the spot in the same location. It's like a bit of dust which isn't cleaning off or perhaps dust which has gotten under the screen.

Any tips on how to thoroughly clean the screen? Tried microfibre cloth with a tiny bit of moisture on it but the spot isn't moving.

Can you tell if the spot is on the surface? You may be able to feel the spot with your fingernail.
If it is not on the surface, then all the cleaning won't make that change. It's a fault in the screen.
It looks like it affects a group of pixels, so may be replaceable under warranty. Take it to an AppleStore for a checkout.

If it is dust under screen I would think that's warrantyable regardless of size, as that's a plain and simple manufacturing fault.
