richard.mac macrumors 603 Feb 14, 2011 #2 its fine if you are happy with USB, Firewire 400 & 800 are faster, but external drives with them will be more expensive. USB 3.0 is new, but is also more expensive and currently no Macs have it. it will come formatted as either NTFS or FAT so format to HFS+ using Disk Utility http://www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/how-to-format-a-drive-or-partition-with-the-hfs-file-system/

Velin macrumors 68020 Feb 14, 2011 #4 If you are going to be moving a lot of data, get a drive w/ Firewire 800, esp. if you are backing up or transferring work or business-related data. If this is a time machine dump, then the drive will be fine.
