I have a new 60W Magsafe 2 charger bought (not from Apple) to replace a broken one, which came in a nice looking box, but on close inspection I've noticed it doesn't have a serial printed inside the plug connector:

Is this a knock off?

There are a lot of knockoffs out there... I tried real hard to save some money on a charger for my old 2014 MBP. I bought one from Ebay and one from a seller on Amazon (both claiming to have genuine parts) with no success. They were not genuine Apple chargers.

Without a serial number, that one is almost certainly fake. The prices are ridiculous in my opinion, but I really think you are better off buying directly from Apple. Probably safer for your machine too...

Yeah I agree with the others, that is likely a knock-off. I'd highly recommend returning it if you can and buying spending the extra at Apple to buy the authentic replacement. Apple has a lot of engineering in their power management, and that engineering helps protect you computer. There are pictures of dissected Apple chargers and their knock off equivalents, and the difference is huge in the circuitry.

Ok so the person I bought it from claims they bought it from an Apple store and never used it..... they've got to be lying right?

Now I'm really confused. According to:

His legit Magsafe 2 charger does say Magsafe 2 and the other text is left aligned not centered. Is there more than one model going around?

Doh! My bad. The charger I looked at was not Magsafe 2 but old Magsafe.

But, still no serial number. Doubt it's real.

If you bought it through Amazon or Ebay file a dispute with Amazon or Ebay on the grounds that you were sold counterfeit merchandise since it is against Amazon and Ebay rules to sell counterfeit items. You could also dispute the charges on the account that you used to pay with. If you used a credit card the term to use is a chargeback.
