Looking for some help. I'm in the process of selling my Mac Mini and posted an advert on Gumtree.

I received interest pretty quickly to which I replied directly to a gmail address. I then received this...

    Hi,
Thank you for the fast reply.
I am willing to proceed with the transaction now and pay you £450
which include p&p.kindly login to your paypal account and select the
request money button located at the top of your paypal account
homepage and send the money request directly to my paypal account id
which is ******.*****@yahoo.co.uk so that i can submit payment to you
via paypal right now as paypal is safe, fast and easy to send and
receive money online. If you don't have a paypal account just login to
www.paypal.com and set up your paypal account, after setting up your
paypal account you locate the request money button located at the top
of your paypal account home page, use it to request money directly
from my paypal account which is ******.*****@yahoo.co.uk once I
receive your money request from paypal, I will submit payment to you
    via paypal asap.
    Get back asap.
    ******

It sounds fair enough but I'm always apprehensive when some provides so much detailed information about Paypal. I emailed back to try and get some more information but the email bounced back from the original gmail account.

    Simple question...is this a scam?

It sounds fishy to me - the blurb about PayPal and why you should use it sounds off. I'm always wary of PayPal as well, as they always side with the buyer in any disputes - it could well be that you'll get the money, but will then be victim to a bait and switch, or an all-out lie.

I always do in-person sales on Gumtree. Sold my old Mac Pro that way, and both myself and the buyer were happy.

    Yeah I figured as much.

I've just done some googling and found a lot of information on this. Looks like it's a definite scam.

It looks a little like a scam, and if you have to ask, you should just assume it's a scam.

I usually go by the thought process that if you have to ask if this is a scam, then it is.
