No it's not and it's not covered by warranty.

Why do you say it is not covered by warranty? It appears to be a defect of some kind.

As you say "It appears to be a defect....." It's all a matter of opinion.

Do you smoke, or the did the previous owner smoke or maybe burn candles near the iMac? I only ask as this looks very familiar to issues being seen on LCD TV's and also iMacs previously mentioned in this forum where the smoke gets drawn in and settles.
Just a thought but I hope you manage to get some sensible help.

There's a lot of posts regarding grey / black smudges appearing over time on iMac displays and Apple, although in the main replacing the screen, are stating that they're caused by environmental factors and thereby implying the customer is at fault. My screen suffered this issue (and has been replaced) and I can categorically state my iMac is situated in a study, non smoking house, no candles, no extremes of dust, no extremes of ambient heat or humidity. It seems to be a design flaw with various theories as to what causes it.

You should definitely get the display replaced, that's not normal at all.

Thank you very much guys! I will try to take it to warrenty and see what happens. However the Imac does smell a bit "smokey" so it might be from that. I hope they will replace it!

    Thanks everyone!

Just thought I'd mention the smoke issues as I smoke myself and have used incense sticks and now have a 40 inch Samsung with 'smudges' on the screen and after checking forums about this issue realise it's down to my own habits and subsequently not covered by the warranty.

Gamskjaer, wishing you the best of luck mate, please let us know how you get on ok :D
