This is my 16” MacBook Pro that I got a few days after it was on shelves. It still under the return/exchange period since it has the holiday return policy.

It is mostly noticeable when watching Netflix or Hulu and my 15” 2017 didn’t have this issue (or it was minor and didn’t grab my attention as much).

is this defective or normal?

Looks a little worse than the usual to me. All screens of this type have it to some degree or other.

Hard to say. You such a poor exposure. But all screen exhibit some if you set the exposure long enough, or a a very high ISO. But it looks pretty tiny if you mean the bleed at the top edge.

thank you. I might just ask for an exchange after the new year.

Here’s another pic. Bottom right and upper middle has light bleed.

Looks less noticeable there. The first shot looks like a longer exposure. If it's only an average amount, it may be better or worse in your next one, so see how bothersome it is in practice, and decide accordingly.

It looks a little bit worse than mine. You might be able to get a better one if you decide to exchange, but none of them are going to be perfect.

The backlight bleed issue won't be resolved completely until Apple changes to mLED or OLED displays on a future model, probably not until 2021.

diid u exchange it ? On my 2017 MacBook Pro I dont have any backlight bleeding. On my iMac 2020 I have also 2 small spots with backlight bleeding
