It is just a cover for the hinge and the airport card. It actually can slide back and forth. Besides, you want a little space there otherwise the screen would scrape against the computer body when you open and close it.

it does slide back and forth! I adjust it and now it's even gap on both sides!! Thank you!
 
Problem is: After opening and closing it one-hundred times, the data cable inside it will cause it to slide over again. It's just the nature of the design :p
 
You should start a class action lawsuit against Apple. We expect perfect panel gaps.
