ehh, could be

What ever that is, it is not totally boxie. If you look close you can see that the corners are rounded off.

Moreover, something also seems to be blured within the lower handle (ports?). It is much more apparent in the larger scan.

But hey, as long as Apple's new power macs have nice specs I'll buy one. It's just going to sit under my desk anyway. Although... I tend to expect more from the designer of the year.

arn has set up the pick via a link on the Mac Rumors homepage. It's been up for a couple hours now.

Considering the fact that the rumor surfaced this morning, I think Apple Legal would've pulled the pic from Mac Rumors ASAP if they were going to. It seems like Apple doesn't really care about this pic, which would almost confirm its fakeness.

I knew that corner was cut off because of tracking down the guy who took the picture or whatever. But by test prints...what do you mean?

I would certainly think that if this was real that Apple Legal would have taken i down, but maybe they wouldn't because they didn't want to disappoint the people who didn't like it:(

I keep thinking that this looks like some sort of eMachine or some sort of server by another company.

Heres how we found out about the current PowerMac. (Image borrowed from someone at Apple Insider)

Too eerily like WTC, but how about this?

Whomever said it looked too much like the WTC towers was spot-on -- gave me the heebie-jeebies as soon as I looked at it with that resemblance in mind.

FWIW, I'd saved the following mockup from some forum or other about a year ago, don't remember where, nor who posted it, nor who mocked it up, but IMHO, this is a much sweeter design (also at http://HTDoctor.com/G5Al.jpg if the forum gets too busy to support pics):

No way is this it

Unless Jonathan Ives got hit with a major case of mental insufficiency, and that is NOT likely, this is, as one of the respondents on this site noted, the generic box that testing PMs are shipped in... this makes the most sense. Other than that, if it truly follows the X-Serve-ish appearance that it suggests, then presumably in real life, it will be shiny as a new pin and very lovely to touch. But I doubt it!

Re: Too eerily like WTC, but how about this?

I LOVED that mockup when I first saw it, and I still do. It fits the look of the powerbooks and the Xserve to a T.

I think this one looks like a 70's or early 80's Hi-Fi. :p

Better than a 70's office building?

More unique at least. It would depend on the actual color of the finish though. I like the really really light silver-metallic idea. But from this shot who knows what the real tone is?

I am seriously doubting this is real though after closer inspection. There are just too many strange things now. The "handles" openings being different sizes and shapes really makes me skeptical now.

I do like the sharp lines and minimalist approach of this "fake G5"(?)concept though. I definately prefer it to the aesthetic treatment of the G5 and cube. Though I love the functionality of the cube and its form just not the osentation.

geez what a touchy subject.. months of speculation whether or not they will pump out 970s, now whether or not they will stick them in a metal shoebox with vents on the front. but hey, shoebox works for me ; )

We are all pathetic.
Like a school of piranhas on crystal meth in anticipation.

smuggled?) someone has an imagination out there after all!

so you take a picture on a camera in a place that you're not supposed to have a camera. then you develop the picture and stuff it in your pants to take it home. that would be great if a) you had cameras in a no photo location, or b) the no photo location had a dark room just sittin there for people to use (But not take pictures home from).

seriously, think about it. i smuggled in a freakin camera (and out too), but i have to crumple up this picture to keep it from getting noticed?

cmon people. common sense here...

matt

I thought the gist of the story was that there was a photo or printout lying around, he made a photocopy of it, then smuggled it out in his pants, then scanned the photocopy in at home.

It is interesting to see how polarized the responses are.

Now think back, when the last case was revealed and you will recall that many were convinced that this was a hoax. Unfortunately, Cupertino did bring out that case despite the hope for something more square, more metallic etc. Perhaps, this is the smaller, squarer, more metallic case that we were expecting with the last update.

By the way, what was that company that promised us the device to accelerate the PowerMacs and then was talking about bring out their own upgraded mac that looked like a retro metallic microphone with the fancy grill work ...

Quite unlikely this is a prototype box, internal Apple prototypes don't have the Apple logo nor the finished (if dull..) plastic grill. Unless they've changed policy all of a sudden (unlikely!)

It wouldn't surprise me if Apple did go for a more "industrial" look on the new PMacs - I think they'll go for a workstation look 'n' feel to the new machines; hence the 'techie' release at WWDC rather than a more popular release at MacWorld (or special event, whatever..)

Mike.

new recon of PPC 970 just in

I think that this recon photo is right on. It looks extremely feasible to be an actual production model. Cant wait.

Is it just my imagination... or does lem0nayde's rendition of the design of the front of the "G5 fake" bring Star Wars and the Empire to mind?

It's ok

I think the case is pretty darn spiffy. It looks kick-ass. It just looks powerful, industrial strength, pepperoni with 9 millimeter bullets pizza, hardcore. It doesn't look a lot like a PC box really, mainly because of the materials. If they made this out of any kind of thin plastic, i would agree it is like a PC box. I mean, if you just replaced the (aluminum, i guess?) with black plastic, it'd be a dell only faster. But the shiny, bright, metal makes it so much more intense. I like this more than the MDD, El Capitan, Quicksilver, and everything else. I don't know if its a fake or not. I just want to see powermacs on monday.

This thread has over 40,000 views as of this posting time... holy poop.

So fake

It's sad how excited we are by the prospects of new hardware at WWDC.

The image must be a fake. Its so uninspiring. The only reason some people here might like it, is due to their long suffering. Think about it. Even the most ugly girl starts looking good if you've been in prison for a couple of years!

I expect more from Ives and Jobs. Please don't dissapoint us. Motorola has hurt us enough already.

PS. If that is the new design, my G4 DA is going to get a case mod (paint?), a processor and video card upgrade. $200 for a 1.2Ghz upgrade in July/August thanks to the 970 maybe? Otherwise my G4 is fine.
