I could be WAY off, but I think this is from a Best Buy promotional. Doesn't seem likely at ALL, but that blurred out image SURE does look like the little yellow tag they use all the time. You can detect some yellow in it, and that tag-shape is unmistakable. I have NO idea why Best Buy would have ANYTHING to do with this, though. There ARE rumors that the two companies will strike up a deal to begin selling Macs in their stores again, but I DOUBT they would be given any priviledged info like THIS!!!

There must be SOMETHING weird going on with that blurred part, though.

Also, for those of you saying this thing is ugly, think of the materials. This looks like it will appear to be molded out of one big piece of brushed aluminum. No seams. I think that's going to look pretty freakin' sweet, and that this picture just doesn't do it justice.

Guess we'll see.

Looks fake to me. The front is not as fluid as pretty much every single PM I've seen. The fact that you can see the whole ROM drive slot if very un-PM like, IMHO. Doesn't look like you can add a second ROM drive, and I think Apple would continue to allow that. If this was snuck out, I'm sure he could have gotten a better scan. It also looks to angular. I think Apple will stay with rounded edges. Also looks to much like aluminum cases that have become popular in PC-land. X-station, maybe. I think the PM will looks different.

Oh, no... That's sounds bad. Am I just blind? ( No I was serious, I don't see an eject button ).

Oh, and don't tell me it's on the keyboard.... I like being able to select the drive I want opened by either dragging it to the trash ( this of course only works when the OS is operable ) or by pressing the eject button on the drive.

Unfortunately Apple hasn't had an eject button on their desktop optical drives for how long now?

What's wrong with the eject on the keyboard. I can eject either drive in my MDD PowerMac with it by holding option and eject for the second one or just eject for the primary drive. I think it's really slick personally.

Awh, man I'm WAY behind. But now that I think about it I guess I've been spoiled by my iMac 233!

So no more eject button, huh? Do they still have the force eject holes on them?

this looks like an old 486 box from acer. give me a break. i bet the blurred out section is an intel inside 486DX sticker.
sorry to be so pessimistic, this just doesn't seem very plausible. maybe there is a door that opens up on the bottom above the handle for your parallel and serial ports . . .
now if i'm wrong, i will let all of you who are right beat me with a pillow case full of doorknobs.
next monday could be the start of a great week :)

Doesn't pass the '**** test'

Steve's all about powerful, innovative, cool designs. He insists that products be so cool "you'll **** your pants."

I couldn't see this box, which looks more like a Mac IIcx than anything else, ever seeing the light of day.

I'll agree with you, except for the Best Buy part, because if it was in a Best Buy ad or something, the yellow tag thing would be much larger...

Pizza Box Mac

I am waiting for the day they come out with the environmentally freindly mac... You know.. the one that lets you re-use those old Pizza Boxes you have stacked beside your refridgerator?

I want a Pizza Box Mac. It would be stylish and give you the ability to change the case on a per pizza order bases.. Just imagine .. you could have a Pizza Hut Double Pepperoni PowerMac? one week, then a Little Caesar Meaty PowerMac? (Power, Power - Pizza, Pizza) next week.. or even a Dominos PowerMac? G5 Hawian with extra ham...

I am getting damn hungry just thinking of the possibilities...

Freakin' Gorgeous

Oh man, I think this thing is freaking beautiful. I love the sleek, bold minimalistic look. I can imagine how beautiful it must look in person, being all aluminum. It looks like it holds up with the rumors - aluminum, open slots on the front, it appears to have a slight plastic encasing outside of the aluminum - of you look at the back corner, there is some translucent material riding the edge. Looks like 2 drive bays in the front in addition to the slot loading drive. And couldn't the ports be underneath that open space at the bottom front of the drive?

My guess about the blur is that it was either an ID number tagging the machine for security purposes, or maybe some as-yet-unnanounced technology port.

So exciting, I want one!

i love it! finally apple did away with those damn handles... functional, maybe, ugly YES. If this really is *it*, i'm satisfied...

This is so freakin butt ugly, there is no way Apple would release this. As far as handles, I'm so used to the current design, I couldn't imagine the tower without handles. Then again, Apple doesn't care what I can imagine -- they usually do the imagining for us!

Maybe I'm just naive, but I think this picture is legit. A few reasons:

1. The pixellation of the image -- consistent with mass-printing for promotional (or advertising) use.

2. The image has been relatively crudely lassoed and removed from something else. That's consistent with this coming from some kind of promotional (or advertising) material.

3. The blurring -- why? It's too random to be made up.

4. The professional, polished design of the product itself (whether you like the design or not).

Granted, the first 3 things are clearly possible in Photoshop. But I see this as one of those things that is stranger than fiction. In other words, it would be quite a forward-thinking photoshopper to think "I'm going to pixellize this as though printed on newsprint, and then I'm going to cut it crudely, and then I'm going to blur a random area of the image to make it seem more authentic."

The 4th is harder for a photoshopper to emulate.

Anyway, we'll see...

this is distressing

DISTRESS DISTRESS DISTRESS

I can't believe this would be the new machine. It's so ugly and common looking. Personally I think it's disinformation. Maybe posted by Steve himself trying to make all rumors sound more unlikely than likely.

That tower is NOT sexy, NOT innovative and definitely NOT appealing. I wonder if the motherboard will fit in an old tower. I also suspect the picture itself. Something not right about the apple logo. ug-ly ugly ug-ly

I've been reading MR now for about 2 years I think. I have a wishlist for apple. iPod/Palm sync compatibility for an on-the-go full featured handheld. Tablet style iBook. Better graphics cards or upgradable GC's in all machines including AIO's.

And the current PowerMac aren't ugly metal boxes with fancy plastic bodywork.

Dump the plastic, integrate the handles, and make the metal box purty...
