Is this malware in Safari?

Every once in a while Safari closes, then reopens in a smaller window with a message that says “Update Complete Finished applying browser update” and has a small box to click that says “Close”.

I have never clicked on the "close" box, but when I try and quit Safari, it chimes and won’t close. I then have to do a force quit to get it to close. Before closing, I clear history and empty caches. When I reopen Safari all appears normal. I’ve checked Safari Extensions, and nothing new is added.

I’m assuming this is some type of malware. But is it something already on my computer, or something that is arriving through the Safari browser trying to get me to click on the “close” button and then download something?

iMac (24-inch Early 2009), OS X 10.11.6, Safari v. 11.1.2.

Here is a screen shot of the window that opens:

It's a FREE download
