Thanks for your input but when did you order your MBP that had similar issues as mine?
Also you had to replace one for a technical issue, what was the issue for that one so I can check?
It was august 2016.
The first replacement was force touch trackpad issue. Probably from one of the first batches.

It seems rather odd to be seeing these issues as a "norm" when we're paying top dollar for these machines. Nowhere else have I seen this for anything new. I'm buying this because of the OS and the retina screen, that's the only reason, otherwise I'd just get a 1000$ cheaper laptop like the zen book 15inch with the same specs or even better specs that has a 4k screen and very slim design.
Yes. There are Windows laptops with the alike or even better screens around. I bought this for the OS, reliability of the hardware & Apple service.

I've been testing the battery life and right now it's at 51% and I've been timing it at 4 hrs and 50mins, mostly using safari and did some App Store updates, watched a few videos as well earlier. Brightness is always around 50% or less in the daytime and 5% at night time.
I'm sorry, Do you mean a full discharge(100%-0%) is yielding you 4hrs and 50mins?

That's not much at all. I get 12-13 hours with Safari at 50% brightness. Including YouTube videos. (2014 MBP)
Yeah, it's a 15" one. Regarding battery ageing, I've always had good luck with that on my Apple devices, aside from my iPhone 4S. The battery reports 97% of it's maximum capacity from the factory. When I sold my 2011 to buy the 2014, it reported 94% health.
Damn! That's pretty great for an old device. First of all
  • Is it a retina device?
  • Are you referring to lite browsing?
  • Would like to know your usage pattern too, Is it always at the desk?
We seriously need some battery maintenance tips from you if the answers for the above questions aren't what I expect.

I see. Regarding the charge I was saying from 100% down to 51% gave me 4 hrs and 50 min of usage. So from that we can say the other 50% will deliver another 5 hrs , making the battery life last almost 10 hrs. How long does your battery last?

By the way I plan to use this as a desktop setup mostly, so I will get a monitor for it, but I like the idea that I can be seamlessly portable with it too if I want to be. But I think I will return this one first as it's not sitting right with me as of now unless I use it a bit more and my mind changes, merely on the fact that I don't like waiting another week and half to get another one.

OP, I see where you are coming from, that is not normal, my refurb came as new, no issues.

It's like you got refurb or model that literally has been sitting around for a few year, do a serial number check to see when it was made

I checked the serial, it doesn't say when it was made, rather it says until when the 1 year warranty is valid to which is Feb 2018. Did you know when they do a refurb they change the serial codes to a new one? In essence there is no real way to know when it was actually made because the serial number can be created at anytime with new or used parts or both.

It does have a new smell especially when it's on for a while and heated. I think this was a case of poor quality control. So perhaps there was poor quality control in other respects too not naked to the eye and internally. I recently realized how the aluminum body flexes if you put pressure on it with your finger, for example near the apple logo or the bottom of the macbook but it seems they're all equally flexible like that when I checked the store. I thought MBP would more sturdier and not have this flexibility in the body/frame but they're not.

It is pretty brillant, yeah. It's a Retina 2014 15" MacBook Pro with 16gigs of RAM and the 4770HQ with Iris Pro (no dGPU). The battery times I mentioned were with browsing in Safari and nothing much else aside from background apps like Google Drive, iStat Menus and Creative Cloud (not active, just in Menu Bar). The browsing itself mostly consists of this site, AnandTech, Wikipedia, my school's website (HTML + CSS no Java or anything), Messenger.com and YouTube.
It is barely ever at my desk actually. I've got an iMac there, so my MBP is for when I'm in the livingroom, at school, or want to relax in bed and not sit at the desk. I almost never use the built in speakers, as it's either just muted, or I'm wearing headphones or am connected to speakers through the 3.5mm port.
In terms of battery maintenance, I never let the battery die - not very good for lithium ions, though there is a protection margin where it won't actually discharge fully. I sometimes leave if for relatively long periods of time, where it's either constantly plugged in, to not use cycles, or discharging slowly to keep the battery cells active, depending on what I feel intuitively would be better at that moment based on previous usage. Also I keep it under good weather conditions - you know, not too hot and whatnot. That can have a dramatic impact on lithium-ion batteries too. Denmark is good for that.
