I just got back from a trip during which time I left my MacBook at home powered down. On powering it up again all my bookmarks were a mess. The order of the ones on my favourites bar had changed, 5 of the bookmarks on the favourites bar now appeared twice, some extra folders had been added with more duplicated content inside them, and the order of the individual bookmarks within at least some of my bookmarks sub-folders had been changed (I suspect all of the subfolders have been shuffled - I'm still sorting this last bit out).

I'm a relatively new MacOS user (Tahoe on a new M5 Pro MacBook Pro) having switched from Microsoft Windows after 35 years of use and this is just yet another of the litany of issues that I'm finding with MacOS and I'm wondering whether this is something I should expect or if it is unusual.

This isn't even because of a MacOS/Safari update because I checked System Information and the only thing that updated when I rebooted my system was the ASUS software widget for my monitor. Also, when I closed down my system before going away I was careful to fully quit all the apps I had running for a clean shutdown (just tidying up) but when I powered up this morning there were about 10 or 15 app windows opened up that I had to get rid of for apps that were not running when I closed down (yes - I did quit the apps themselves before shutting down not just red-buttoned the active windows but still leaving the app processes running).

Is this level of chaos really what I need to expect whenever I switch on my MacBook after having powered it down for a while? It's nice that my MacBook automatically powers on when the lid is opened but not so great that if I need to try and allocate an hour of time after every power-on to re-organise my bookmarks, get rid of duplicates and phantom bookmark folders and clear my 32" monitor of layer upon layer of unwanted open windows and quit the apps.

Check if you have syncing bookmarks between devices. Given Apple’s user friendly UI it will be listed under icloud in Setup.
