Someone on craigslist wants my 4,1 mac pro 12 gb 750gb samsung evo and 2tb hd in exchange for thunderbolt display.
Is this worth it? I was trying to sell my mp for cash...but this guy says that thunderbolt display have better resell. Is this worthy trade? or would it better if I took 2tb hd out from it. If i get this thunderbolt display..would i be able to sell it faster on CL?

The other issue with the TB display - there are no other inputs. Thunderbolt is the only choice.
That immediately takes it to a niche product on CL - buyer has to have something with thunderbolt. Not many choices outside of Macs, and not all of those...
You can't even use it with your cMP4,1 for example.

I wouldn't trade a 4,1 for a crusty old Thunderbolt display. That's a bad deal. The going rate around me for a used thunderbolt display is 400-600 bucks (depending on condition or the desire to get rid of it). They can only be used on Thunderbolt equipped macs. If it were the mini display port older brother (27" LED Cinema Display) then I might consider it as it can be used on any device capable of carrying a display port signal.

Is your 4,1 in the price range I mentioned above?

little above...700. Now that you guys mentioned display TB is for those macs with TB...I didn't intend to use it as I was planning to re-sell it to recoup the loss.

No, don't do it! The cMP hold it's value because of upgradability, and it can be use like a normal PC. I've seen quite a few people buy the cMP purely because love it's looking, but use is as a Windows machine. However, the T_display CANNOT be used on anything other than a Thunderbolt equipped Mac. And if Apple announce another 5K display in the next few day, the T-display's value will drop a lot.

Even if we disregard all the points above. If he can sell the T-display easily with good value, he won't initiate the exchange with you. I suspect he want to do that is because he can't sell it. If you want the cash but not a T-display, better don't do it. Most likely it will just keep you further away from what you want.

I would go one step further and add that when an exchange in proposed, if you are not the one proposing it you are most likely losing and not gaining....

That is because if you propose an exchange you are getting what you are looking for, if not you might end up with something "junkier" than what you had before and that the other guy probably tried to sell / give away without success.

Great tip. Honestly, I haven't thought about that way at the time he tried to propose it to me with that junk.

HAHA...i can't believe this guy has the nerve to say this:
"Hey let me know if you still have this for sale. I'm in SF for business and will be leaving at the end of the week. I'd like to pick this up if I could."

I told him that i declined...and he said
"Alright then. I wasn't asking for it to be delivered, so good luck to you as well."

What an A**....I didn't even mentioned about delivery.

^^^ maybe I'm missing something, but why did you decline his initial message...?

(assuming this is not the same guy with the TB display, as one would likely not be traveling on business with such gear...)

I'm assuming you are in SF? If he is in SF and offering to pick it up... where is the problem?

So he was traveling with a Thunderbolt Display with him??
