Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I'm quite new to the mac world.

If I want to connect my MBA to an external monitor and keyboard and use it in clam shell mode, can I use any monitor/keyboard and just plug in and go? Or are there any complications to this?

    It is quite straightforward.
Connect display and keyboard and mouse and use it.

Link BT keyboard and mouse, plug into monitor use as desktop...it couldn't be any easier! It will even allow you to use your MBA as a second display if you open the screen...otherwise the external display becomes the only one.
