I use my ipad on top of my laptop keyboard and my friend says this is bad for my ipad. Is he trolling me or does he have a point?

I can't imagine why it'd be bad for the iPad. If anything it's probably not great for the keyboard on the laptop.
He says the laptop's hardware will affect the ipad's hardware and that it could lead to hardware damage. I am now paranoid about using my ipad near my laptop...
If you have a Smart Cover (magnets) and a non-solid state drive, it might damage the hard drive, but that's all I can think of.

I very much doubt that the magnets in the Smart Cover are strong enough to damage a hard drive.
I thought so because my friend warned me not to drop them. Ive been warned because it could break against the floor.
They may mate, and you end up with a baby Surface Pro.
