Is Verizon really dropping email services?

A friend got a notification that Verizon is not going to support his email accounts after April 12th. He can retain the addresses, but has to migrate them over to AOL to do that. I have Verizon also, but didn't get any notifications from them. Is this really happening?
 
I think contacting Verizon directly would be the way to go.

Or visiting their online forums.

I did a search and found this FAQ.
 
Looks real, but sure seemed too weird to be true. I haven't been notified yet, so I guess it's being phased out in stages?
