I'll let you know as soon as I get some blank DVD's to burn my downloaded copy.
Yes, it was a legal download from the Vista site, keep your pants on, you anti-piracy freaks!

Also, Apple is the only computer that can officially run System 6 - OS X, Windows 3.1-Vista, Linux, etc.

I wish this were true, but I think it's been a while since Apple has shipped a machine that could boot into Mac OS 9 (or lower for that matter). Am I wrong?

It might be kinda fun if I could reinstall Mac 0S 9 on my Tiger running eMac. It's getting poky and I miss the little quirks of OS 9, the control strip was sooooo nice, and I liked the Application switching palette.

Nope, you're not wrong. However, I said run as opposed to boot; running System 6 - OS 9 can be done in an emulator environment on Intel Macs (which does run rather smoothly), or a virtualized environment in PPC Macs. Heck, even Rhapsody DR2 for x86 runs in a virtualized environment using Parallels on Intel Macs, not that it's useful.

I guess what I'm saying is, while standard PCs can run most of those as well, Macs have the added advantage of official OS X support. So, in the end, Macs can run just about anything under the sun, though I can't see anyone having to run System 6 on an Intel Mac.

no, it's just like XP with a bunch of useless junk and badly placed eye candy.

Yup...Xp with a facelift ;)

Tiger beats Vista, wonder what Leopard will do :p

To those of you who have used Vista, can I run most XP software on it? Can I still use Firefox, Trillian, Winamp...? Do I need to find special Vista-compatible apps?

And more importantly, will AVG, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot run on Vista Beta 2?

I actually find the Vista GUI quite disgusting.

Translucent window titlebars? Didn't we try that years ago and find it to be annoying and thus it was removed?

Not usually, but you'll probably begin running into trouble with 16-bit apps and legacy DOS-based apps. The Java runtime environment crashes IE7 and disables Aero Glass, and a lot of browser media plug-in's (flash, shockwave, etc) don't yet work. Also, if an install fails due to compatibility reasons, Vista will try to run it in a compatibility mode.

ieXbeta.com has a compatibility wiki (some of it is inaccurate) tailored to users' findings in that arena. My Avira AntiVir XP works, however I have to run the manual update exe standalone -- the integrated auto-update does not work. Also, Symantec AntiVirus corporate edition has been known to have some issues, though they're mostly worked out now.
