the "5A345" version isn't the final the 3G phones were made long before 2.0 went final. That's why it isn't using the current "5A347". During activation they should have added a feature to automatically update it to this version.

If you're new 3G iPhone is a bit laggy, make sure you check your version. As version 2.0 (5A345) is the premature version that was meant for v1 2.0 iPhones and somehow was put on the new 3G iPhones. You should be on version 2.0 (5A347). I just restored my iPhone to the newer version and no more lagging and it seems to be running much more smoothly with less hiccups.

Hi Sleepyyet,

I'm new to the iphone in general (never had the original). I just purchased the iphone 3g. Can you please tell me how to (step-by-step) check my version and if it's the premature version, how can I upgrade it?

Thank you in advance.

geneticfreak...go to settings, general, about on your iphone
And it will tell you the version # there. If it is the older one, restore your iphone.

Back to the point of this thread- my iPhone delays about 2 seconds when opening SMS. That's it

Thanks so much ipodtouchy. My version is the older one (and is lagging)... can you please tell me how to "restore" my iphone.

The firmware in itself is laggy on both my old iPhone 1 and on the new 3G. It's clearly an issue Apple needs to address in the first update they release. Sometimes it freezes, and other times it jumps all over the screen when I am typing in Safari.

Thanks very much for this. I just discovered mine is on the old version which will explain things.

Don't jump to conclusions. Mine has the latest FW. On my phone, scrolling is choppy. Typing is sometimes laggy. Safari's screen often gets stuck in one rotation or another.

+1

Something needs to be done about this. I give it (hope) less than a week before we see 2.0.1

I'm still using the original iPhone, using 2.0 software, and I've definitely noticed a lag. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the apps can't run simultaneously...

I'm also using the original iPhone and using 2.0 and I've also noticed a lag.

I had this issue twice and just turned it off then turned it back on. It's because too many things have been open. Whenever I open, AIM, Photobucket, Facebook, Myspace, Safari, iPod, Messaging, and BofA all at the same time, things get a little slow. There should be a quick way to clear all the processes.

How exactly are you opening all of these apps at the same time? I was under the impression that you could only open one app at a time. With the exception of the iPod of course. I have surfed the web on safari while listening to the ipod. I have had the iPhone since day one of last year and if this is something that I have missed all along I will feel pretty dumb. Please clarify.
Thanks!

I'm about to go to the latest firmware (347) to see what happens. I'll post back with results, and also see if that "yellow tint" goes away..

If you retore your iphone to the latest firmware, what happens to all your contacts, apps, pictures, and everything else?

My 1G 2.0 software iPhone is definitely laggier and I also get periodic resets to the home screen.

Some bugs still need to be squashed obviously.

Yes this happens to me, (maybe it's just a glitch) as well as the lag....I'm getting lag right now as I'm typing this. Another thing I'm not too happy with, is the service I have. When I had the original iPhone (got stolen) I had 5 bars 95% of the time I was at home, now it seems to be the opposite (95% of the time with 1-2 bars).

Anyone else with the same problems im having?

I have moments like that here. It'll be 4-5 bars most of the time and then in a few minutes (while not being moved) it'll show as 1-2 bars. It will go back to 4-5 bars though after a few minutes though.

If you have 1-2 bars for that much time though then try resetting the network settings, as I've heard that works for some people.

Guys restore to 347 and then try... this was exactly what was happening to me, especially with the phone contacts. 347 should fix all of this.

I've been using 347 since day one (I had to restore about an hour after getting it home, long story) ... BTW, the contacts app is laggy - the phone app's contact list is not. ;)

Well guys I've been running 347 for about 3 hours now, and let me tell you its like night and day right now. Right when I opened my 3g, literally walking out of the att store, I remember I noticed the lag immediately, and I hadn't installed any apps so I've ruled that out (the apps being the problem). Being on 347 right now, everything is running faster. No more lag in contacts, or in SMS. Even some of my apps seem to be faster. The only thing I haven't installed yet is AIM, and I read on a post around here that some guy removed AIM, and his lag went away. I'll do without the AIM for a couple of days to see if lag doesn't come back. Again I recommend you restore with 347.

BTW, I backed up before so, and after I restored to the 347, and wanted to use the back-up I created, it said it wasn't compatible.

BTW 2, the yellow tint did not go away...

So the backup of the iphone won't restore if you update to the newer firmware?

I'm confused. Are you all wiping your iphones clean? Or does the backup resync it to its original state, with the newer firmware.

Someone clarify this.

If you restore your phone and then restore a backup, everything will look and feel the same. You will have to sync a few things (with mine it was namely music), but applications, contacts, email, etc. remained after I restored (for the firmware) and then restored from a backup.
