When I went to the Apple Store on the apple campus (for WWDC afterparty) they had a WWDC special where they had the airport extreme and the isight marked down 20%.... how rare is it for apple to have a "sale" on anything

Mind you it was only in one store... so moving extra inventory was probably not a motive... but worth a mention I thought.

Airport extreme is also slipping (7-10days)

Guys calm down. Theres no revision. I just ordered an iSight earlier today, and it gave me a ship date of October 31st.

It just shipped.

Just thought i'd let you guys know....

And if they do update the iSight, I probably won't care that much, as I don't use it for professional purposes. But judging by the fact that mine shipped a few hours after I ordered it, I don't think they are running low on stock or preparing for an update.....

More like end of life!

Apple are becoming more and more ruthless on their products. With the introduction of iSight across the range, they are probably making the iSight 'end of life', just as they did with the Airport cards when all their products (bar the G5 tower) had Airport Extreme built in.

What does that mean for all of us, me included, with older macs? Tough s**t! Go into any Applestore and ask about upgrading or adding to your existing mac, and if they don't make it anymore, they'll act like they never did! Scum beatches!

BTW, the Apple Displays are probably going to get built in iSights as well!

If they do that, the quality of the built in iSight will definetaly not be greater than the quality of the iSight I just ordered. And as I prefer an external iSight to an internal one, i'll be happy! 🙂

October?

4-8 weeks?

That's as good as unavailable

And I don't want a built in iSight, creepy

You don't like Steve seeing what your doing? I too had mixed feelings about the built in "porn cams" as named by some.

*recalls several movies about certain things being recorded with a camera that wasn't supposed to be on*

It looks like the isight has been dropped from the UK apple store, I just did a search for it and all I got was the griffin light thing that clips on the front, no isight listed! (or maybe I'm just bad at finding things)

The iSight hasn't been on the UK or Swiss sites for a while. I tried to buy one a couple of weeks ago, and they are nowhere to be found (not even in shops). I have one being sent over from India cheap. Same thing happened to me with the Airport Extreme. Removed two days before I wanted to order it. Still a couple left in stock at the local shop though. As a previous poster mentions, it was axed because of some of the chemicals/materials used in its construction. The legal levels of some of these in consumer products were reduced in Europe in July I think. I expect the new iSight will be much updated, but the old one will do me, and I found a cheap one.

iSight was dropped in Europe/UK because of the RoHs regularions : http://www.rohs.gov.uk/

I hope there is a new one, as I want one, and the eBay price is now as high on second-hand ones as it used to be on new ones.

And I'm sure the same people that bought the $100 leather iPod cover to go along with the iPod socks are really interested in this. 😎

Who actually bought the isight? It's nice and all, but at that price??

I am sure there is still some "old" stock to clear.

My thoughts...

Smaller - possibly sits lengthways along the top of the screen.

USB 2.0.

Built in light (illumination when talking but also may be used for alarms etc).

Built in IR reciever (unless new ACD have IR).

Better resolution - say 1-2 megapixels - for HD iChat and/or picture taking/scanning etc

Maybe an optical or digital zoom/wideangle.

It would be nice to have a new iSight with built-in IR and bundled with Front Row and Photo Booth.

Would make sense.

New iSight Firewire 800 ...now, that will be cool!

And also completely unrealistic 🙄 .

Although I'd like the option to use it in FW800 mode on my powerbook, that's not the bottleneck for video (unless capturing to iMovie or some such use). For video chatting, FW400 is plenty fast.

Is anyone thinking that PhotoKina will have some bearing on this.
Apple is attending, for the first time, a photography show. I tells ya, it's crying out for rumours of new screens, more integrated updated cams, a revision of photography software (Aperture) from Apple.

They're doing a "special" presentation on Sept 25th.. (Only 3 and a bit weeks away) (Wouldn't it steal the show's thunder if it wasn't about Photo related kit though? 😀)

Now if the Airport stock selling out was due to interface changes with secret wireless ipods/iPhones/laptop G5s.....

I dunno if anyone has mentioned this... but when Jobs announced the built in cams on the iMac he said the quality was actually higher than the current isight camera. So this cam isnt even up to the quality of the built in ones never mind other cams on the market.

And it is fair to say that while this cam was worth the money at the time its now grossly over priced for what it is.

Add to that the fact that it doesnt meet european requirements...

Id say its fairly obvious theres gunna be an update soon.

Still to be found in some shops in UK

My father in law bought a G4 iBook three months before the MacBook came out and just after I have bought my Rev A MBP. I am responsible because he wanted a machine sooner than the MB would arrive and also I told him that at least with the G4 he would know that everything would work. He is very happy with it and it is quick enough but didn't come with an iSight. We bought him one for his birthday recently from John Lewis in Newcastle. They had a few boxed examples when you couldn't buy them from Apple any more. It works well and is great because you can move it about unlike the built in ones. I have one for my Mac mini and I was helping my dad who just got a G5 iMac refurb with iSight built in and it has been really helpful that I can just pop the iSight off my monitor and point it at my screen and show him what to do. Of course, the next version of iChat will make this unnecessary but it is cool to be able to do it now. I hope they do bring out another iSight rather than relying on putting one in the display.
