Both phones run iOS 8.1. Isn't the 6/6+ just the iPhone 5S with the only noticeable difference being screen size?

Yes I heard they even have the same processor as the 5S. In fact the 4S, 5, 5S, 6/6+ all even have the same camera. Only 8MP! Can you believe that?

TouchID hardware on the 6/6+ is said to be more durable with new contact points. TouchID is also working much better on the 6/6+ for many of us so that might be due to a combination of better hardware and software.

Add OIS to that list as well.

That's only for the 6+, but the real-world benefit seems limited though.

Again, it's remarkably incremental compared to other upgrades. Compare iPhone 5S -> iPhone 6 vs the iPhone 3GS -> iPhone 4

I'm not saying the 6 is a bad phone. It's just what we should have had last year

The iPhone 4 didn't offer anything new other than a front camera and everything else was just an evolutionary upgrade (better screen, battery, processor, camera, etc.). How's that different from 5s -> 6?

It's definitely pretty incremental besides for the screen size.

The hardware and software have advanced so much since 2010 that I think a lot of what mobile phone engineers wanted to accomplish has been accomplished. Incremental is to be expected at this point.

However, I think it would be a mistake to say that display size is the major advance. In the long run, I think that of all the tech introduced with the 6/6+, Apple Pay will have the biggest impact. Mobile payments have been done before, but I think Apple's system will set the benchmark for usability, security, and general adoption.

That's how the iPhone works. iPhone 5 was a taller 4S with a new, faster chip. The 4 was the 3GS in a new body with a faster chip. The 3G was the 2G with 3G capability. Just like the S is always an internal improvement of its predecessor, the 6/6+, 5, 4, etc. are the previous S model in a new body with incremental upgrades and some new features. Nothing new here.

I certainly haven't noticed enough differences in the 6 over the 5s. I sold the 6 & put the cash from the sale & my 5s in my pocket.

3GS to 4 were both CortexA8 cpu.

5S to 6 is new generation cpu. New higher tech process. More complex with substantial power savings. Added NFC.

6 has a CPU at essentially the same speed, same RAM, and the same camera (if anything it's worse). The graphics improvement is negated by the higher resolutions (especially in the 6+). The one notable feature is NFC, and until Apple Pay is more widely accepted and/or Apple opens up NFC to developers, it's not that big of a deal.

4 was clocked 33% higher, had a significantly faster GPU, doubled the ram, added a gyroscope, added facetime, improved the main camera, and most importantly - added the retina display

The A8 is only 100MHz (<10%) faster than the A7, and is based on the same cyclone architecture.

I agree that the iPhone 6 is just an iPhone 5s with a larger screen.

I also think the Internet is just an encyclopaedia, but with more pages.

You're wrong about the camera. See https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1782694/ Granted he didn't make comparisons between the 6 and the 6+ because he used a tripod (negating camera shake and hence the benefit of OIS), but pictures taken with the 6/6+ are much improved over the 5s.

As for graphics improvement being negating by the higher resolutions in the 6+, you're overlooking that the 6/6+ have much better contrast ratio than the 5s.

I think the 6 is very much a small increment over the 5S but the 6+ is a true leap forward in display (size, quality, & resolution), camera tech, and battery life.

It's just a shame the performance didn't make the same substantial increase we are used to. Not to mention the 1GB RAM still :(
