Recently my apps stopped switching after being selected through alt-tab, except they only get selected in the menubar. This is very irritating having to use mission control each time I wish to actually switch between programs, so any thoughts on how to get rid of this bug or whatever it is?

And is there a way to make applications open in certain desktops instead of the one that is currently opened? Having to drag each app every time I open it is also tiresome.

First - the correct keys are cmd-tab. Hopefully, that's what you meant, as opt-tab (the Windows alt key) doesn't do anything app related.

To assign an app to a Destop, click and hold or secondary (right) click on the dock icon, then > Options > Assign to. You can select Desktops by number or to "This Desktop".
