Issue with Apple Mail - issue with default ports

I seem to be having issues sending and receiving mail with Apple Mail. The error that keeps coming up says something about "connections to host on the default ports failed." Does anyone know what that is and how to resolve it?

that sounds like email provider related issue, settings or access ... are you using a free service or is it a work email?

Are you using a VPN? Some providers block such connections.

Better to go to Mail - Menu - Window - Connection Diagnostics to see what's wrong.

That may well be a VPN. See if you're able to switch it off.
